Step 1
- We would first have a discussion with you to understand your circumstances and assess your eligibility to apply for citizenship, including checking if you meet the residency requirement:
– Have been living in Australia on a valid Australian visa for 4 years immediately before applying, which must include the last 12 months as a permanent resident, and
– Not have been absent from Australia for more than 1 year in the past 4 years, including no more than 90 days in the year before applying
Step 2
- If you are eligible to apply for citizenship, we would prepare your documents and check for any issues.
Step 3
- We would prepare and lodge the citizenship application and submit your supporting documents.
Step 4
- After lodgement, you should refrain from travelling overseas so this can show your intent to stay in Australia (but you may still travel where it is necessary and reasonable).
Step 5
- You should also prepare for your citizenship test (you may use resources available online).
Step 6
- Once Immigration processes your citizenship application, the authorised officer will invite you for a citizenship appointment.
Step 7
- You must take your original documents to your citizenship appointment and you will be asked to sit the citizenship test.
Step 8
- Once you pass the citizenship test, your citizenship will be approved and your local council will invite you to arrange for citizenship ceremony attendance.
Step 9
- Generally, you have 12 months from the date of your citizenship approval to attend a citizenship ceremony. At the ceremony, you will take an oath to become an Australian citizen and be presented with an Australian citizenship certificate.
